How to Speak Dragonese

How to Train Your Dragon: How to Speak Dragonese - Cressida Cowell

Why is David Tennant not voicing a character in the movie??? Seriously, it's a no-brainer. He is amazing in these books and I even picked up a doctor who audiobook on sale recently since I saw he was the narrator.

This book takes place about a year after the last with Hiccup again not being a good viking. He's basically failing most of his classes. My favorite comment was about his interactions with foreigners, he speaks polite french as opposed to the viking way, yelling at them.

For their most recent task, he and Fishlegs were supposed to find a fishing vessel, board it, and steal a hat. Unfortunately they come across a Roman fighting ship. They manage to escape, but Hiccup loses half of his "How to Speak Dragonese" book and Toothless is captured.

Hiccup overhears their plan (since he also speak Latin, another non-viking trait) which is to capture the heirs of the Hairy Hooligans and the Bog-Burglars and make them think it was the other tribe.

Even with Hiccup's warning, he (and Fishlegs) are captured by the Romans posing as Bog-Burglers, which makes no sense to him since the Bog-Burglers are women and their kidnappers are clearly men.

After being captured they meet the Bog-Burglar heir, a young girl named Camicazi. I'm fairly certain she's the inspiration for Astrid. She's a great fighter and after attacking Hiccup concludes he is a good sword fighter. For a boy. Her escape fail and they end up the fort's arena where they are told they will have to fight.

I remember learning about Coliseum fights in school and how they would sometimes even flood the arenas to have sea battles. Which is exactly what they do here. But instead of fighting against a group of Romans, seaworm dragons are let loose into the arena. Seaworm dragons are basically deadly sharks who also have legs and can climb on deck to chase you. Extremely dangerous.

Hiccup manages to get the three of them out due to his good deed of saving a nanodragon named Ziggerastica the Living God. On the way back they run into both of their tribes ships. Stoic decided to trust Hiccup and instead of going after the Bog-Burglar tribe, he goes in search of the Romans. Naturally, the Bog-Burglars chased him. They call a truce when the kids literally crash on deck but Hiccup knows that his father is beginning to trust him. There was also a deadly nanoworm who apparently stung someone, but we don't know who...

But yeah, I'm really enjoying this series and love David Tennant's narration.
