The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy

The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy Slipcased Edition - Yoshitaka Amano

Final Fantasy VI (which was released as Final Fantasy III for the SNES in the US, long story) has always been my favorite video game. I have many memories of either playing myself or watching my older brother play. It's a fantastic game, and one of my favorite aspects was the artwork in the guide that we had.

Yoshitaka Amano always loved drawing and became an artist for the anime Speed Racer when he was 15. Years later, he joined the company Square for its new game, Final Fantasy. After the game became popular, it turned into a long running series which still exists today. He served as the main character, image, and graphic designer of the series for the first six games. He did continue to work with them and provided promotional and character artwork for the following games and even designed their title logos.

This book is a collection of artwork he produced for the first 10 games of the series. His artwork is one of the most defining parts of the earlier games when we were stuck with small sprite characters. He breathed life into them and made them feel real. Most of the work is for my aforementioned favorite, probably due to the large cast of characters. A few works of his that I could find online are under the spoiler cuts.
