The Emperor's Edge

The Emperor's Edge was a book I picked up for free (and it's apparently always free if you're interested) back when I would download anything cheap and looked interesting. I did a fairly thorough sweep of most of those books earlier this year, but this was allowed to stay. It had good reviews and sounded like something I may like. One of the reasons I never actually read it was because I had also read a similar book (high fantasy) that I got for free that I did not like and never finished and always had the two confused.
Anyway, this was chosen for me to read this last month and I will say that I will never have the two confused again.
The Emperor's edge is a high fantasy with some steampunk elements about Amaranthe, who finds herself on the wrong side of the law, really without meaning to. She starts the book as an enforcer (police) but gets on the bad side of the defacto leader of the society because the emperor takes a liking to her and he's been controlling the emperor.
She manages to get away, but learns of a plot to kill the emperor and comes up with a plan to try to stop the assassination and assembles a team to help her. Maldynado was probably my favorite member of her group, a nobleman who loses a bet to her and is hilarious in his interactions with her and the other members.
I definitely enjoyed this book, although it's the first of a seven book series. Gah! I have the rest of the books now on an alert for when the price drops.
