Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Volume One
After finishing my reread of Codename Sailor V it was time to move onto the main series, of which I had previously read up to volume 5. One question. For Booklikes is there a reliable way to add rereads? Unfortunately there was only one version of this book in the database and so I had to erase my previous reading from 2012 so that it could count for this year.
Anyway, if you've seen the series (and Hulu is currently uploading two episodes a week of uncut subtitled episodes and of course we have the new season starting up in less than a month :) ) you know generally what the story is about. It starts off the same with a girl, Usagi, finding a black cat with a cresent moon shape on its forehead. The cat tells her that she is the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and she must transform to fight the forces of evil.
The manga story is much more accelerated than the anime. Within two more chapters she gains the allies of Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars, which doesn't happen until episodes 8 and 10 respectively in the anime.
The artwork is gorgeous, though it does lack the transformation sequences that are well known from the anime. While the major plotlines of the next three chapters do happen in the anime, they take a very different route and I look forward to seeing how the new anime adapts it.
One change I liked is the relationship between the generals of the Dark Kingdom. In the anime they keep trying to usurp each other, but in the manga they care for each other. Though, as a fan of the scouts/generals pairing, a part of me died when Rei and Makoto killed their soulmates. I did also like this Mamoru is younger than his anime counterpart. Makes that whole romance much less creepy.
I do like that the anime does develop the relationships between the scouts more, but hopefully there will be more in later books.
