Neal Stephenson is an excellent imaginative writer.
If you decide to read this book I recommend taking your time and having a notepad next to you to take notes.
What he did with this book is amazing and confusing. It takes place on an kind of an alternate version of Earth, which shares some similarities with our world, but a few thousand years in the future.
Fra Erasmus is an avout who lives in a Mathic community which is kind of like a convent, but secular and the different orders interact with the regular world on different intervals.
It's very difficult to explain much about this book without writing an essay. I found one for you about the history of the society if you're curious.
Why the low rating? It was just too much for me. I didn't have the time to sit and really absorb the book. But if you like good sci-fi and can devote a lot of time to reading and understanding this book, you are in for a good experience.
