The Last Girlfriend on Earth

The Last Girlfriend on Earth: And Other Love Stories - Simon Rich

The Last Girlfriend on Earth is a collection of short stories which generally fall into the fantasy/sci-fi realm. As it usually is with collections, some stories are good, some are just okay. They're organized into categories of Boy Meets Girl, Boy Gets Girl, and Boy Loses Girl.

My favorites were "Unprotected" which is from the point of view of a prophylactic and his long life inside a teenage boy's wallet, "The Last Girlfriend on Earth" which is a reverse Y: The Last Man, with one woman left on earth, and her boyfriend deals with everyone wanting to "get her advice", "The Present" in which a scientist uses a time machine to go back and find the perfect gift for his girlfriend who he routinely ignores, "Children of the Dirt" which adds another sex to Aristophanes's Speech from Plato's Symposium, and "Trade" in which men are traded and drafted as boyfriends similar to baseball teams.

I did pick up this collection when it was on sale, but I don't think I'd pay full price for it. It was a bit too directed at the unlucky in love mid 20s male.
