2013 End of the Year Book Survey

Taken from the Perpetual Page-Turner Blog:
1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)
Just One Day by Gayle Forman. I loved Allyson and the journey she went on to really figure out who she is.
2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Just One Year. The sequel to the above book. I did have insanely high expectations of it going in. It fell short of those and then some. It was an okay book, but I wanted so much more out it, especially having read Where She Went which was the companion to If I Stay by the same author.
3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?
Written in Red by Anne Bishop. I had added it to my reading list based on a few good reviews I saw, but then forgot about it. Someone picked it for me to read and I absolutely loved it like stayed up late to finish it which I actively try to avoid doing. Highly recommended. I can't wait for the sequel.
4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?
Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
5. Best series you discovered in 2013?
Fever Series. Rollercoaster ride from beginning to end.
6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?
Lisa Kleypas. I picked up her Wallflowers series for a challenge and even though I only needed to read two I read the entire series.
7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
Nothing, I read everything to begin with and while I may not want to be seen reading certain books, I'm comfortable reading them for myself.
8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?
The aforementioned Fever series, in particular Shadowfever.
9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
I'd really like to read Beauty Queens. It was my first audiobook back in January and I really want to read the actual book.
10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?
The Girl Who Would Be King by Kelly Thompson (it's linked above). The author has some really great artwork from other scenes in the book as well.
11. Most memorable character in 2013?
MacKayla Lane from the Fever series. Yes she was blond and bubbly, but she was also any amazingly strong individual who I can't wait to see in future books. Claire and Jamie from Outlander are a close second.
12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?
Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. I wasn't crazy about the first book but the second was amazing and I totally loved it.
13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. As I've said many times before, my first audiobook and it completely hooked me to them forever.
14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read?
Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I had always known about this book but had never read it. So glad I finally did.
15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?
Best Serious:
“It's okay,' he tells me. 'If you want to go. Everyone wants you to stay. I want you to stay more than I've ever wanted anything in my life.' His voice cracks with emotion. He stops, clears his throat, takes a breath, and continues. 'But that's what I want and I could see why it might not be what you want. So I just wanted to tell you that I understand if you go. It's okay if you have to leave us. It's okay if you want to stop fighting.'
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Best Romantic:
“Ye are Blood of my Blood, and Bone of my Bone,
I give ye my Body, that we Two might be One.
I give ye my Spirit, 'til our Life shall be Done.”
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Best Funny:
“Adina appealed to the sky. "We asked for rescue and you sent us incompetent rockstar pirates with a broken ship and perfect abs?"
"Thank you, God," Petra said.”
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2013?
Mists of Avalon (876 pages/51 hour audiobook) and The First Kiss (8 pages, Iron Fey Novella)
17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!
End of Just One Day. I started yelling at the book.
18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).
Jamie and Claire from Outlander.
19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously
Emma by Jane Austen. I had read Pride and Prejudice many years ago and finally made my way through the rest of her books this year. Emma was my favorite of the five.
20. Best Book You Read In 2013 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:
Nothing actually. I started the Belgariad series last year and read the second and third books at the beginning of this year before giving up. I do take too many things into account to choose a book solely on someone's recommendation.
21. Genre You Read The Most From in 2013?
I'm lazy to count but it's probably fantasy.
22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?
Jamie Frasier from Outlander.
23. Best 2013 debut you read?
I only read one apparently. The School for Good and Evil. It was fun.
24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?
Written in Red by Anne Bishop. I loved the world-building in this book. So so much.
25. Book That Was The Most Fun To Read in 2013?
Beauty Queens by Libba Bray
26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year
Or When It Came Out?
Nothing actually. I realized after going through all my books I didn't read a lot of 2013 books. I do plan to read more new releases next year.
