Troubled Waters (Audiobook)

Troubled Waters - Sharon Shinn

The world built up in Troubled Waters is really intriguing and based on that I will continue the series.

The protagonist did not work for me. I felt like I had no sense of who she was as a person, despite the book taking place from her point of view. One scene has her and another character and she denies to herself that she does not think of him, but it is done in a way to imply that she does think of him often, but the reader has not seen that at all. We are told that she thinks of him but do not actually see it happen.

In my review of the Fuzzy Nation audiobook, I mentioned that the repeated use of "said" grated on me. In this book, Zoe repeatedly thought about how much time passed and she couldn't believe how long ago/how recently something had actually occurred. It started to make me think she has a terrible sense of time. She thought about time probably more than her love interest in the book to be honest. Jennifer Van Dyck was a good narrator otherwise.

There were also a few plot points in the last few chapters of the book that did not work for me and made it difficult for me to support the main characters.

The next book takes place from the point of view of another character so I think I will give it a try at some point.
