Eragon (Inheritance Cycle Series #1)

Eragon - Christopher Paolini

"Now can anyone tell me what foreshadowing is?"

-Severus Snape, A Very Potter Musical

That line is how I felt about this entire book. I picked this up years ago when it first came out and while I enjoyed it, I made a guess which I did find out later to be true. When it comes to foreshadowing in media it really depends what the twist is for my reaction. In this case, it was a

"I'm fairly certain that Eragon is Murtagh's brother and I feel it's too obvious with the matching scars."

(show spoiler)

Overall the book is decent, though I was rolling my eyes at most of the names of places and people (I imagined the author thinking, "It needs more fantasy names, I'll add more apostophes!") and the author borrowed a fair amount from basic fantasy tropes e.g. young hero, old mentor with a secret, mysterious stranger, mystical girl who needs to be rescued, evil emperor. I have decided to finally finish this series, maybe it'll get better.
