The Woodcutter is a fairytale mashup featuring, well the Woodcutter, who is not a man but protects the forest between the twelve kingdoms. One day he happens across a dead girl and uncovers a plot to take over all the kingdoms.
There were some interesting aspects for the story how the different tales were woven together, but unfortunately fairytale mashups have become popular and when I compare it to stories like Fables or Into the Woods it falls short.
Many fairytale characters aren't in the story for long and I think it hurt the book. I think it would have been better to narrow the focus and develop the characters more. It's a standalone at least.
