Storm Front
Dresden Files is another series I have heard a lot about. In particular I had heard a lot about the audiobooks which are read by James Marsters, aka Spike on Buffy and Angel and my favorite character. Another thing I had heard about the series is that the first few books aren't great, but the series does build and get better as it goes on. Considering I picked up the first seven books when they were discounted earlier this year, I will be reading them, eventually.
Dresden Files follows Harry Dresden, Chicago's (and likely the world's) only advertising wizard. As in, if you look in the yellow pages under "Wizard", you find him. And only him.
There's numerous references to the past. There's something called the White Council which regulates magic. He's not on their good side, though we don't know the specifics. One thing that did get on my nerves is that he lies to a police friend (one of his sources of work) about why he can't help her. The truth, is that it's illegal for him. Instead he just dodges the question. I never understood why he couldn't say it would get him killed. Also, I wasn't a fan of how the women were described. Always sexually with numerous vivid, descriptions of their bodies. And they generally wanted to sleep with him.
While I did have some other issues with the book (why do you make a love potion for kicks? why? there is no possible way that is not going to go well), I can see it growing into an interesting series.
I did also like James Marster's narration. I will never be used to him not being British, but I thought he fit the character. I did have an issue with his pacing. Usually I listen to the 1.25x narration speed on the audible app, but it was off for him, so I switched to the regular speed.
