The Thirteenth Tale
The Thirteenth Tale was a book I picked up randomly from a library sale. I'm pretty sure I had it confused with Thirteenth Child by Patricia Wrede, whose Enchanted Forest Chronicles series I am a fan of.
Regardless, I did read it and enjoyed it. It's a gothic mystery story about a woman, Margaret Lea, who is chosen to write an autobiography of a reclusive mysterious author, Vida Winter. Vida has famously told numerous stories of her past, but never the truth. Margaret agrees to write the book, but only if she tells the truth. And so begins a tale of twins and secrets.
It did start slow, but I eventually got into it and kept reading till I had finished. I thought the twists were well done and for the most part unexpected.
There was a BBC adaptation that I am attempting to watch (ideally legally). The cast in general looks great (Vanessa Redgrave as Vida), Sophie Turner plays her younger self and I love her as Sansa on Game of Thrones and want to see her play another role. Unfortunately I can't find a DVD release, no streaming on Netflix or Amazon, and the movie has only been broadcast twice.
