A Kiss for Midwinter is another novella in the Brothers Sinister series, taking place after The Duchess War. It opens a few years before with aspiring doctor Jonas Grantham shadowing the current area doctor to see a patient. He has promised not to talk, just observe, and he plans to go to medical school soon and will take over the practice when he returns.
The patient is a young 15-year old girl who is unmarried but pregnant. The doctor prescribes a medicine that Jonas thinks is unsafe for pregnant women but due to his agreement not to speak and lack of medical training, does not speak up.
Years later, he returns a full doctor and takes over the practice. He plans to take a wife and has been working on list of the top 10 prettiest girls to avoid wasting his time. He can't decide if Miss Lydia Charingford would be number 10 or 11. He decides to talk to her to determine whether or not she should make the list.
After a conversation where she basically refuses to talk to him, answering in only short phrases, she becomes angry and accuses him as planning to blackmail her for her past pregnancy, as she was the 15 year old at the beginning of the story. It's also around this time that Jonas realizes that she is the one he wants to marry. About a year and a half later, he decides to convince her of this fact.
A Kiss for Midwinter was a really fun and short read. I think I would've happily read a longer version.
